EITO (European Information Technology Observatory) nasce nel 1993 da un'idea di Smau e da allora è diventato sempre più conosciuto e diffuso, non solo in Europa, ma in tutto il mondo. Uno strumento per chi lavora in questo settore, ma sempre più un punto di riferimento per tutti quanti vogliono conoscere i nuovi sviluppi dell'economia digitale. Smau contribuisce a definire anno per anno i temi più rilevanti per il mercato europeo e quelli che hanno una specificità particolare per il contesto italiano.
Il Rapporto EITO viene realizzato ogni anno con il contributo delle più importanti fiere europee del settore, come Smau, Cebit di Hannover e Simo di Madrid, di associazioni europee, come Eurobit ed Ectel, e con il prezioso supporto della Commissione Europea. Dall'anno 2000 l'Unione Europea ha formalizzato EITO come gruppo europeo di interesse economico.
