Increased average life expectancy associated with growing illness in old people produced a major need for caregiving. Among the problems related to elderly caregiving mistreatment by the caregivers is quite underestimated. Beginning from the definition of mistreatment in old people we examine risk factors for both victims and perpetrators, psychological aspects involved in mistreating behaviors and hypothetical preventive actions on the basis of international experiences.
