During the first half of the XVIII Century Catalonia and the whole of Europe were characterized by a quick spread of calico printing. This new manufacture involved a deep transformation of production tecniques. The development and diffusion of foreign technology was crucial in the passage from traditional production based on workshops to new centralised factories. Technology spread in Catalonia through the two main diffusion channels: the mobility of technicians and the transfer of knowledge, both sustained by specific state policies that, in many cases, made up for the shortage of private capital.

Keywords: Catalonia; cotton; technology; manufacture; economic policy.
