Mainly based on archival sources and scientific research published during the addressed time period, the article retraces public representations of immigration to Italy between the end of the Seventies and the late Eighties. Focused on the key role played by the Italian scientific community in considering the complexity of immigration, the article describes the evolution of immigrants’ social profile until the killing of Jerry Essan Masslo (1989), a watershed event in the history of immigration to Italy.
