Since the year 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement has gained significant prominence internationally. This paper examines the extent to which the student population adheres to this movement in a context such as Italy, which, although different from that of the US, has seen significant media coverage of the protests. Based on the 12,658 responses collected in the survey “Practices and Cultures of Sustainability in the Ecological Transition”, the role of family background, educational setting, and value orientation is first examined. Second, we will focus on the impact of respondents’ background: since BLM is a movement characterized by the defense of minority rights, it will be shown how this variable strongly influences the level of engagement, raising questions about a more cross-cutting involvement within such mobilizations.
Keywords: Black Lives Matter; social movement; youth activism; values; structural inequality.
