The essay examines the historiography of Latin America produced by Italian historians in the last two decades. Three main tendencies emerge: a sharp contraction of colonial studies, a convergence with the history of international relations, and an emphasis on the political history of the 20th and 21st centuries. The aim is to examine the causes and consequences of these trends for the future of the area history in Italy.

Keywords: Latin America, Italian historiography.
