Legitimation and Prejudice. Broadcast Seriality in Italian Critical Reflection The authors identify three phases of the serial television formula in Italy: the age of the “sceneggiato”, the age of “fiction” and the age of “TV series”. For each phase, they trace the evolution of theoretical analysis, focusing on the main objects of study, themes and research questions. In doing so, they find that the recent explosion of scholarly interest in pay and streaming TV series has not been matched by an equally vibrant increase in studies of broadcast series. The authors discuss this evidence and show how generalist production has instead responded with creative originality to significant structural changes in the contemporary television market.
Keywords: fiction; TV series; Italian television; sceneggiato; television studies; seriality.
