“The Brutalist” is the story of László Tóth, a Hungarian Jewish architect who survived the Shoah and, having emigrated to America, finds in “The Brutalist” movement a way to express his trauma and desire for eternity. The film follows his difficult integration and the creation of the Van Buren Institute, an architectural complex that reflects both the horrors of the past and the hope of transcendence. Through a powerful and dreamlike visual language, the narrative intertwines László’s personal suffering with the ethical and aesthetic principles of Brutalism, culminating in the revelation of the profound meaning of his work at the Venice Biennale, a testament to memory and human resilience.
Keywords: dignity, art, Van Buren Institute, Brutalism, Shoah, Trauma, Memory.
