While there is no shortage of studies on the relationship between war, military service, and masculinity, the connection between the refusal of military service and gender representations has rarely been addressed. The paper investigates this relationship in three stages. First, it focuses on “maternist” pacifism’s interpretation of conscientious objection. Second, it looks at the self-representation of objectors and the way this interacts with the traditional model of masculinity, while exploring how the image of objectors contrasts with the model of masculinity conveyed by the extreme right. Finally, the third part focuses on the peculiar interpretation of military service elaborated by “disarmist” feminism, especially in preparation of the inclusion of female volunteers.
Keywords: pacifism, conscientious objection, war, masculinity, feminism, Gender History
