Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991) is often described as one of the leading exponents of Marxist thought on geography and the role of the urban in capitalism. To the 'abstract space' of capitalism, dedicated to exchange value, Lefebvre contrasted 'differential space,' the triumph of use value and what would later be called spatial justice. However, to be a useful concept in a struggle to overcome capitalism, differential space must be able to contribute to decision-making processes in a wide variety of rapidly changing urban contexts. These decisions include those involving a mediation between present and future differential space. In this context, the use of discounting methods becomes necessary; thus, the conditions are created for considering in the discussion and analysis of differential space both the advantages and problems associated with the practical application of these methods.
