This essay examines the Statutes of the Wool Guild of Brescia, drafted between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, as a key source for understanding pre-industrial urban textile production. The analysis focuses on three main dimensions: the economic organization of artisanal work, the internal social dynamics of the guild, and the regulation of technical practices. A close reading of the statutory chapters reveals rules aimed at quality control, the protection of artisans’ rights and duties, and the definition of power hierarchies within the guild. These norms reflect a constant negotiation between individual and collective interests. The statutes thus portray a corporation that not only regulates labor but also actively contributes to shaping an economic and social order based on skills, reputation, and reciprocity.
