This article analyses the effects of the autarchic policy imposed by Fascism after 1936 on the relationship between the banking system and industrial financing. The intense planning activity undertaken by the corporations to implement their autarchic plans represents an interesting moment in the broader development of Fascist Italy’s new economic policy. In this context, the financing of investments envisaged by the corporate plans became the decisive element in testing the value of the credit system established by the 1936 Banking Law. Drawing on quantitative data collected by the Credit Inspectorate and preserved in the historical archives of the Bank of Italy, this contribution reconstructs in detail the trends in lending, the distribution of credit, and the temporal and functional specialization of loans.
