This article summarises the biographical and academic profile of Nicolò Spedalieri, the Catholic jurist and reformer who, in his work “I Diritti dell’Uomo” (1791), he developed the concept of popular sovereignty, challenging the hypersecularist nature of ‘enlightened despotism’ and anticipating themes and programmes that would form the basis of 19th-century social Catholicism in Italy and Europe.
