This article focuses on Goethe’s journey to Sicily, and in particular to Catania, in May 1787, providing a detailed account of his itinerary through the city and the villages around Mount Etna, culminating in his adventurous excursion up the volcano. By setting out in detail the dates, locations and reasons behind the great German writer’s stay, the author offers a valuable insight into the history and cultural significance of the Grand Tour.
