This article offers a careful re-examination of the political events of the Risorgimento in Sicily, drawing on extensive archival documentation of the revolutionary events of 1848-49 in Catania, which helps to refute the notion of a disorderly ‘jacquerie’ and to re-evaluate the political action and liberal demands of the Etna elite.
