The article highlights the importance of developing a scientific classification of local ‘dialects’ and of compiling an updated Vocabulary of the Sicilian Language that takes into account both written sources and current spoken usage. The author’s work on defining the geographical boundaries of the metaphonetic areas and standardising orthography has made a decisive contribution to the establishment of regional dialectology.
