In the Essays, the concept of indignation is largely absent, and Montaigne’s relativism would seem to preclude a passion that presupposes a shared idea of justice. However, Montaigne often expresses his indignation and invites readers to share it. To account for this paradox, the article proposes a reconstruction of the possible founda- tion of indignation theorized by Montaigne in the Essays, starting from the concepts of «complexion» and «discours». His indignation at cruelty offers an example of this foundation.

Keywords: Montaigne, cruelty, skepticism, values, indignation.
