In his book Gli esuli del Risorgimento Agostino Bistarelli analyzes the Italian exiles referring essentially to those banished after the 1821 uprisings. His text is a careful and very precise reconstruction of the political and personal experiences of the first wave of Italian exiles, in the various countries where they settled. His research enables us to pose important questions relating to the roots of the patriotic engagement and the nature of the link between the fight for liberty and the nationalist movement.

Keywords: Exile: Risorgimento; Italy; Nation building; State building.
