This paper intends to focus on some factors of weakness and strength of the Italian productive system emerged (or confirmed) in the last years. In the paper a lot of themes are analyzed including, in particular, the recessionary crisis of 2008, still in place, the main causes and the characteristics which distinguish it in comparison with the previous crises, the crisis of structural under-consumption, the main effects of the crisis on the Italian economy, the strategies adopted by a large part of Italian firms aimed at regaining competitiveness in the world markets, the role and strategies of the industrial districts in the last twenty years. Finally, some reflections on economic and industrial policy are developed with the aim of identifying some guidelines to be followed to lead the Italian economy on a path of lasting and sustainable growth.
