An analysis of the normative apparatus that underpins the game of bridge has the potential to furnish new points of view - compared to classical comparisons, such as with chess - for elaborating on the function of certain rules. In particular, an explanation of the role played by the ‘declaration’, which constitutes the most conventional moment in the progress of the game, appears to call for an update of certain aspects of normative language itself, so as to achieve a satisfying definition
