This article explores the integration of Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition with human responsibility toward the natural environment, as well as global and intergenerational justice in relation to environmental resources and risks. After examining Honneth’s reflections on the human relationship with nature – an aspect largely underrepresented in his later writings – the article analyzes how this theme was addressed in Social Action and Human Nature, the 1980 volume co-authored with Hans Joas. This discussion, which engages with certain Adornian themes, will also trace the implications of Adorno’s reflections on humanity’s relationship with nature. The aim is to outline a perspective on human responsibility toward the natural environment, grounded in recognition, non-anthropocentrism, and ecological and environmental justice.
Keywords: Honneth, Adorno, nature, recognition, environment, domain.
