Immigration is a structural element of Cape Verdean society. A widespread imaginary has been built around it in literature, poetry and in traditional tales. In this paper I will outline how the migratory process is a polysemic and ambivalent process both in social practices and in the symbolic sphere - for those who stay in Cape Verde. To start with, I will discuss the additional power that is attributed to people and things coming from outside, then I will take into account the imaginary that is built around the ‘Abroad’ (Terra Longe) and the homeland (Terra Mamaizinha). To conclude I will consider the changes that occurred in the imaginary when the "Abroad" became theatre of feminine practices.
