Low vision in a context of cognitive or multisensory impairment represents a serious obstacle to the recovery and to the fulfillment of potentialities of the child; it is frequently observed in cases of cerebral palsy and mental retardation. The most frequent causes of low vision in this kind of subjects are periventricular leukomalacia, retinopathy of preterm, optic atrophy, congenital cataract in systemic or chromosomal disorders, hereditary retinal dystrophies and maculopathy. The rehabilitation is particularly complex, because it requires eye interventions and treatments to avoid that visual impairment hinders the maturation of other functions, particularly the cognitive ones. Therefore the health structure which cares for the specialist tests and possible surgery, the rehabilitation services and the team that draws up and controls the rehabilitation project must have a close and continuous cooperation.
