Local health authorities have become very big public agency, introducing new institutional roles in their mission such as politics and health care systems planning. The new political function needs to be decoupled and explicitly organized. There is a need to design its structure, to define its managerial tools and to look to managers able to interpret such a function. The paper analyzes the case of Bologna LHA in order to discuss if and how should a political function be implemented in local health authorities.
