By combining personal memories with considerations about his "Maestro" Renato Treves’s contribution to science and cultural policy, the author dwells upon some characteristics of his thought, which stayed unchanged for more than sixty years. Among them are the research of stylistic and conceptual clarity, the love for critical spirit and the rejection of any kind of dogmatism, as well as the appreciation of empirical research for checking theoretical speculations.
