The article aims to explore the emerging geography of the shrinkage of the Italian territory. Since the recognition of this new geography requires the dismantling of the consolidated images linked to the depopulation and abandonment of moun¬tain-rural contexts, here the adjective "emerging" assumes a fundamental role. The hypothesis that moves this work is in fact that the so-called internal areas are a completely consolidated area of contraction. However, the geography of the contraction also affects other contexts. With different intensities it concerns areas that were central in the twentieth-century urbanization process, such as the most fragile metropolitan interstices and fringes, the medium-sized cities with different levels of functional centrality, the peri-urban and the urban-rural continuum in plain and hilly areas, i.e. a large part of what we call In-between Italy.

Keywords: Shrinkage, abandonment, In-between Italy, aree interne, metro¬politan cities
