The issue of biographical work on psychiatrists of the past is included in that of the biographies of the different actors of the psychiatric scene and in the overall discussion on the biography genre in the context of historical research. Among other aspects, this paper explores the relationship of biography to autobiography, prosopography, the approach to historical figures with the tools of the psychological disciplines, and the historical novel. Two current trends are also discussed, the particular success that biography compared to other areas of historical research, and the growing tendency of biographers to make their presence felt in the story being told. The latter is also linked to the question of the relationship between the time of the reconstructed historical events and the time of the author’s contemporaneity. As regards the history of psychiatry, two possible effects are attributed to biography. The first has to do above all with the knowledge of psychiatry of the past, and can enrich the wealth of knowledge of the history. The second has to do mainly with the use of comparison with the past for improving present-day psychiatry, and can improve the psychiatric care.
Keywords: biography, contemporary, historiography, history of psychiatry, psychiatry.
