This article seeks to retrace the course of the North-South divide in Italy during the years of the Republic. Starting from an introduction on the period from Unification to 1945, it shows how the divergence widened again when the path of European integration, i.e. from the early 1980s, accelerated with the introduction of new budgetary constraints and the abandonment of the mixed economy that had characterised Italy in previous years.
