Adopting an innovative approach, the article explores the key role played by liberal intellectuals in the rise of Italian children’s and youth periodicals. This is achieved through a wide-ranging analysis of the press in question and a reconstruction of the editorial and socio-political context. By comparing various journals from the 1830s, the study focuses on their goals, themes, ideas of society and nation, as well as the editorial and communication strategies they employed. Continuities and fractures over the long term are then examined to identify some evolutionary paths of this publishing sector in the following decades up to the political Unification of Italy.

Keywords: liberalism, periodical press, children, youth, nineteenth century, Italy.
