Many studies prove that prisons influence the urban spaces that host them. However, the relationships prisoncity have limited attention from design disciplines and therefore the prison continues to be problematic for the city. In Italy, this subject was at the center of the reflection of Giovanni Michelucci, who presented the prison as a part of the city. According to this perspective, discussions about the prison can only be understood in relation to the city as a space and place of social coexistence. The paper positions itself on this perspective and asks if this relationship can be renewed from an urban planning point of view through the presentation of the project I CARE, developed by the Lab of Critical Planning & Design [DIDA-Unifi] on the territory in which the prisons of the city of Florence exist.

Keywords: prison; urban regeneration; participatory processes
