This contribution introduces the Special Issue of Mondi Migranti on schools, universities, and young people with a migrant background in the Italian context. The presence of these students, now structural, has acquired new dimensions and interacts with dynamics that differ from those outlined in the journal's last Special Issue on education, published in 2012. With their increasing presence and gradual integration, academic literature documents numerous studies that examine a persistent condition of educational disadvantage, attributable to socioeconomic factors and to forms of discrimination linked to migrant family backgrounds and processes of racialisation, while also identifying potential trajectories of success. Recent research has begun to explore access to higher education, shedding light on dynamics of social mobility and the potential for agency. The articles in this Special Issue present research concerning various levels of education, from preschool to university, also including unaccompanied foreign minors. The contributions analyse the voices of a range of actors (students, as well as parents, teachers, and practitioners), employing mixed-method and qualitative approaches, such as the collection of semistructured interviews and focus groups, along with biographical and participatory practices.
Keywords: school; university; migration background; educational inequalities; racialisation.
