Starting from the perspective of studies on inequalities in tertiary education (Bathmaker et al., 2016), this contribution mobilises conceptual tools that come partly from the work of Pierre Bourdieu (Bourdieu and Passeron, 1970) and partly from the perspective of intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989) to investigate the subjective experience of a student with a migrant background, Amina, with a twofold objective:1) to illustrate the processes through which stabilisation of power and privilege is produced and reproduced within and through higher education; 2) to account for the practices through which students negotiate with the university field from a dominated position.
Keywords: second generation students; higher education; educational transitions; Bourdieu; intersectionality.
