The formation of mixed couples and families is one of the most eloquent indicators of the development of a multi-ethnic society, in which the sphere of the most intimate personal choices challenges the social conventions anchored to homogamous traditions. Mixed couples, however, especially when a foreigner marries a local woman, remain an atypical social fact, often frowned upon. The article explores the topic in depth on the basis of recent research promoted by Aifcom (Italian association of mixed families and couples) and Centro studi Confronti (2024), based on a survey using a questionnaire and on seven focus groups organized in seven different cities. The main results reveal the prevalence of mixed unions as an outlet for successful integration, for more than half of people with degrees and belonging to the middle class.
Keywords: mixed couples; families; religion; prejudice; discrimination.
