The League for Patriotic Action among women Employees (Lega Api) was founded in Milan at the end of 1917 under the auspices of the main internal propaganda organisations; in its short life it participated equally in the initiatives of Mussolini’s Fasci and the nationalist party, justifying its presence not as a political choice, but as a simple expression of patriotism above the parties; with the same nonchalance the members were invited to join the scab organisations against strikes in the public services. This original association also anticipated other aspects of what was to become the regime’s policy, such as the leisure time organisation initiatives, through which they implicitly endorsed the political side they were supporting, without, however, ever proposing any debate or confrontation of ideas in this regard. Style and language of the Api militants also closely resembled those that would later be demanded of the women’s fasces, in particular sobriety in dress and spirit of sacrifice.
Keywords: fascist female activists, women employees, organisation of leisure time, post war period, propaganda, Milan.
