This article examines the subject of the first Athenian expedition to Sicily (427-424 BC) through a critical re-evaluation of the available literary sources (Thucydides, Philistus, Diodorus, and minor texts). With methodological rigour, the author demonstrates certain limitations and inaccuracies in Thucydides’ account, in particular its ‘Athenocentric’ framework, and emphasises the importance of Philistus’ alternative reconstruction, which, though more fragmentary, is closer to the Sicilian perspective.
