The article highlights the ethnic and linguistic diversity of ancient Sicily, drawing attention to the historical and archaeological traces of the Italic peoples (Mamertines, Siculi, Sicans) who are thought to have integrated with the indigenous inhabitants in a successful multicultural intermingling. The author’s argument is supported by recent historiography, which has revised the nineteenth-century narrative of an exclusive predominance of Greek colonisation on the island.
