The article offers a critical review of the traditional view that there was an inherent dualism between the freedoms secured by the northern communes in the Middle Ages and the Norman and Aragonese monarchical centralisation that is said to have undermined local autonomy in southern Italy. The author analyses the case of Catania, demonstrating the ability of its urban patriciate to secure extensive administrative and economic privileges from the Aragonese Crown.
