Founded in 1983, Cheiron has always been a meeting place and interdisciplinary discussion of social, political and economic themes and issues within a broad time span that often disregards or sometimes exceeds the traditional chronological scans adopted by historiography.

The monographic slant - which has always characterised the journal - constitutes the means by which the Editorial Board, in osmotic contact with international scholars and specialists, has intended and intends to give as exhaustive an account as possible of the chosen theme. Each issue is entrusted from time to time to one or more editors (external or internal to the editorial staff itself) and is conceived as a field of confrontation between specialists from different disciplines around major themes: long-term structures, institutions, social functions, historical periods, geographical areas, cultures.

The journal, today in a renewed guise, aims to continue to be, as in the past, a place for the elaboration of historical meaning and at the same time a guarantee of intermediation between different historiographical souls, a free port of ideas, open to anyone who endeavours to exercise the social and civil function of a historian.
