The article considers the case of the ILVA steel plant in Taranto to analyse the failure of the privatisation process. It contends that the underestimation of the institutional setting related to such a process and the privatisation of the regulatory model by a big private firm have led to its crisis and have triggered defensive reactions from the local society which started to protect its cohesion and its very existence.
