Italy has been particularly affected by the global economic crisis, which encouraged many Italians to emigrate. This paper would contribute to the study of this phenomenon, paying particular attention to understandying the reasons for emigration, and going beyond the analytical dichotomy between migration vs mobility. The analysis of 35 qualitative interviews with young people who emigrated after 2007 shows that the reasons for emigration are several and they are not exclusively caused by the economic crisis. The typology developed - the disappointed/unsatisfied, the pioneers, the mobiles by nature - try to represent this heterogeneity, and highlights the need for a multi-causal approach to the study of the recent Italian emigration.

Keywords: Youth; Italy; global economic crisis; emigration; intra- EU mobility; international migration.
