This essay intends to suggest a redefinition of the cultural and normative dimension of the prison system that overcomes the traditional opposition between legal culture and criminal culture. Based on the results of a qualitative research carried out in prison, the authoress claims that prison culture, as a set of rules, codes and behaviors, is structured as a common culture among all social actors of the prison in response to the characteristics of a unique moral and social environment. This evidence undermines the main theories about the subculture of the prison community and about their opposition to the culture of the institution, while opening the way to a critical, sociologically founded analysis of the working of the prison-machine.
