Focussing on Emilia-Romagna cities already UNESCO sites, this paper investigates what being a "World Heritage Site" means and verifies the opportunities that it can trigger, considering both the relationship among ordinary policies (planning and protection policies) and the UNESCO management tools, and the increasing benefits that the protected site offers to the historic urban fabric.
