When talking about Pavia’s urban shape, we usually think about the typical castrum fabric, the city center being enclosed within the belt of Spanish fortifications. Outside lie the suburbs, built after WWII, being the majority of the space we inhabit: this comes across as problematic to depict and gets subconsciously removed. This inquiry into the recent metamorphosis of Pavia is an invitation to improve our consciousness of the space we inhabit. It’s about refreshing our perception of the built environment our parents established, from which we constantly detach ourselves, willing to grow up, yet with affection and uncertainty. Here all play a role: subjective and collective perception, aesthetics and community thinking, care. And further: how each generation moulds the builtscape, adapts to it and feels represented by that, the local and daily experience of our relation to the world.

Keywords: urban shape, inhabited space, architecture, landscape, Pavia, 1950-2020.
