The European Certificate of Parenthood is one of the novelties of the EU proposal for a Regulation on the recognition of parenthood (COM(2022) 695 final). It is modelled on the European Certificate of Succession, making the necessary adaptations, in order to facilitate the movement of parent-child relationships within the European Union. All in all, the adoption of the Parenthood Regulation is not free from obstacles: there are doubts as to whether the proposal will achieve the necessary unanimity in the Council, as emerges from the positions recently expressed by the Italian Senate and by the French Senate, which raised several critical questions, commenting (also) on the European Certificate of Parenthood. The purpose of this contribution is to outline the characteristics of the Certificate and the possible critical aspects of the instrument, as well as to examine the positions expressed by the aforementioned national Parliaments and to formulate some reflections on the possible impact of the use of the Certificate in the European Judicial Space.
