This contribution seeks to highlight some of the challenges that secularism encounters, due to the presence of various disintegrating factors, such as the return of religion in the public space as a factor of identity recognition, which risks generating radical cultural conflicts, engaging democratic insti¬tutions in the search for a model of social integration and management of diversity, and the instrumental use of religion by populist and nationalist parties, which compromises the secularity of the State and limits the process of European integration, reflecting on how to address them.
