This study aims to observe an unprecedented cross-section of Italian diplomatic life in relation to the trade union-political arena in the period 1986- 1987. In particular, it analyses the different reactions to the reform project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mae) and the questioning of the diplomatic career in the light of the new Mae’s operational requirements and the criteria for classifying foreign posts. In this regard, the research intends to focus on two forms of diplomatic resistance, namely the split within the diplomatic union with the creation of an autonomous organisation (ANDI) and the first general strike called in the history of Italian diplomacy.

Keywords: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reform, Italian Diplomacy, Trade Unions, Foreign Service Officials.
