It happens more and more frequently that psychotherapy patients make use of voice messages in order to contact their therapists, justifying this choice with their greater practicality and speed compared to text ones. Voice messages anyway oblige interlocutors to listen till the end without commenting or expressing their opinion: an uncomfortable position for therapists, accostumed to give and receive immediate feedbacks, even by means of text messages, whose speedy sequence makes them resemble a conversation, a similarity impossible when there is a one sided obligation to listen only for a while. Voice messages moreover require special means or places or conditions in order to guarantee the necessary privacy when they are sent or listened to. A specially conceived questionnaire has been administered through social media to 233 psychotherapists in order to investigate their opinions and personal and practice experiences with voice messages: special care has been given to collecting their opinion about patients’ motivations for choosing this particular way of online messaging. A description of clinical cases, inclusive of transcriptions of some voice messages, follows in which it is possible to find correspondences with results of our investigation.
Keywords: voice messages, psychotherapists’ opinions, online investigation, clinical cases, rules of use.
