The article starts with a survey of the existing historiography on the issue of Soviet Union funding for the Italian Communist Party. Drawing largely on unpublished sources, it seeks to update its classification and, above all, to highlight (and reconstruct, as far as possible) the changes that occurred during the Gorbachev era. Furthermore, it aims to understand the reasons why this issue informed only marginally the moralization campaign unleashed in the country from 1994, despite the political interest of those who sought to shed light on it.

Keywords: Communism; Italian Communist Party; Soviet Union; Victor Zaslavsky; Bettino Craxi.
