The essay examines the process of accession to the Socialist International (SI) undertaken by the Italian Communist Party (PCI), later the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS), between November 1989 and September 1992. This process held dual significance: on the one hand, it marked the final stage in the long and complex journey of the Italian communists towards the international social democratic movement; on the other hand, it represented one of the concluding phases of the left-wing rivalry between the PCI-PDS and the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Drawing primarily on archival sources, the article seeks to reconstruct the key turning points of this process and highlight its most significant issues.
Keywords: Italian Communist Party; Democratic Party of the Left; Achille Occhetto; Socialist International; Italian Socialist Party; Bettino Craxi.
