The article illustrates the research and intervention project “SM-Stare Meglio” described in detail in the book: Bonino S., Borghi M., Calandri E. e Graziano F. (2021). Vivere con la sclerosi multipla. SM – Stare Meglio: un percorso di gruppo per il sostegno psicologico a persone neo-diagnosticate. The article illustrates the theoretical foundations, which consider multiple sclerosis (MS) a challenge to personal development. Consequently, the intervention examines central existential themes: identity, sense of coherence, self-efficacy in pursuing significant goals; furthermore, it considers the body, emotions, cognition, and their mutual interactions, as well as relationships with others in various life contexts and ways of good communication with healthcare personnel and family members. The article highlights the close relationship between research and intervention, the project’s strong point, describes it in its concrete ways of implementation, and motivates the importance of intervening in the first period (3 years) after diagnosis, even if the project can be proposed to people with more years or other chronic diseases. It also reports a summary of the results on the crucial theme of openness to change and resistance during group meetings.
